Portland Arms
Having once been one of Britain's ugliest pubs, The Portland Arms has somehow become one of the city's leading live music venues. A recent refurb took away the scary looking farming tools, but thankfully spared the 1960s carpet and nicotine-stained walls. Musically and socially, it's diverse and idiosyncratic, with a clientele consisting of everyone from old fellas to late teens, folkies, hippies and indie kids. Rock up for indie showcases featuring local heroes like Lion's Share and Right Turn Clyde, or something from the roots and dub stable. The mid nineties patronage of the mighty R.E.P.E.A.T. fanzine has laid the groundwork for new promoters, who book bands and artists nation- and even world-wide. Recent highlights include Bad Timing's flawless selection of avant-electro, and Harvest Time's devotion to the folksier side of things. Despite the blackboard boasting the 'best burritos in Cambridge', this is primarily a place for liquid nourishment.
