The local has shut it's doors and the offie has shut up shop, but you're dying for a pint. Here's our pick of where to get that late drink....
Light Bar
66 Regent Street (01223) 308100
Once the venue of Venue, and now the venue of the Light Bar. This is very stylish without being pretentious, and ultimately very cool. Enclosed in a bright orange setting over Regent Street and away from the maddening crowd, it’s easy to feel like you’re in another city. No hordes of sweaty shirted oafs elbowing you at the bar here, just big leather sofas to sink into, chilled out tunes, and by far the best cocktails in Cambridge. Recommended, but for god’s sake keep it to yourself.
Mon-Sun 12pm-2.30pm, 6pm-11.30pm (Fri & Sat ‘til 1am)
Food served: As above
Slow cooked tagine of beef with cinnamon & mixed fruit with cous cous £7.95
House wine £11.75
Devonshire Arms
1 Devonshire Road (01223) 316610
Right next to the Live and Let Live pub and the railway bridge, you’d think it's in a good location, but it can be almost impossible to find after a couple of drinks. If you’ve come on a pilgrimage to the fabled late-license pub, then unless you catch it on a good night (like the African night on a Tuesday) it’s a bit of a disappointment, but then life’s a bitch like that. There’s nothing much else in the vicinity, so get used to it.
Mon-Tue 7pm-12am, Wed-Thu 7pm-11pm, Fri-Sat 7pm-12am, Sun 12.30pm-10.30pm
The Junction
Clifton Road (01223) 511511
Mainly a live venue but also holds a few of the city’s most popular club nights. Although Friday’s Boogie Wonderland seems to consist of the same 4 hours of music played in a slightly different order each week – a laugh at first, but on repeat visits the urge to hurl yourself off the railway bridge rather than hear ‘Ring My Bell’ again gets progressively stronger. Saturdays are split between different events, the most notorious being the Dot Cotton Club, which as the name suggests is the closest Cambridge gets to a gay scene. As such it’s built up a loyal following, even attracting London clubbers – yes, even people from London. Not to everyone’s tastes, but if you see your bank manager/lecturer/boyfriend strolling past in fishnets you’ll know where he’s going. A strict zero-tolerance policy on drugs, which means random searches and heavy security, so try and resist the temptation to take a joint for the long walk home.
The Fez Club
15 Market Passage (01223) 519224
A Moroccan-themed club that has much more than just fake palm trees to make it stand out. Manages to feel intimate rather than cramped, exotic rather than dark and smoky, and most importantly, cool without being pretentious. A mixture of chilled-out staff and varied music lures Cambridge’s bright young things out of The Slug & Lettuce and Vaults. A mixed group policy at the weekend means the numbers of lads ’n’ lasses stay roughly even, so if you’re in a big single sex group play the game and split up before entering. This policy cuts out the kind of hunting in packs that can make Fifth and Life so uncomfortable for stray females.
