Gainsbourg
Serge, je t'aime...
Review
What is it about the French that means they can pull off such silliness and such style simultaneously? It almost makes us want to wear sandals without socks in an effort to keep up. However they manage it, they've done it again. Gainsbourg is a work of charm and beauty despite its kooky bits.
All we really knew about Serge Gainsbourg before we saw the film is that he was a bit of a womaniser and he ought to have owned shares in Gauloises, and to be honest, that's still more or less all we know about him. Although it's clear he had as much of a penchant for booze later in life as he did for the ladies. The film sees the musician shift from shy, loveable artist to arrogant, selfish musician, leaving a trail of once-loved ones in his wake.
Obviously the soundtrack was magnificent. We'd have whacked out a vuvuzela in protest if it hadn't been. Eric Elmosnino was also magnificent as the eponymous casanova, supported beautifully by every one of his trail of girls, and managing to mature physically and mentally in a most convincing manner. To the point where it made us feel a bit sick seeing the grey-haired nicotine-stained rocker get with a hot young twenty-something, despite knowing that the actor's in his thirties.
The storyline, as with so many biopics, is by no means gripping. But there is no denying that "Serge" was a fascinating character, and watching him get corrupted by his own success is more captivating than you might imagine. And if you don't want to get bogged down in the psychology of it, just enjoy watching sexy French people rollicking around to sexy French music for a couple of hours. Très bien, oui?Gainsbourg is released nationwide on the 30th July
